Dental Health Month
Did you know that February is Pet Dental Health Month? Pets have teeth too! An astounding 80% of dogs and 70% of cats show signs of oral disease by age 3 according to the American Veterinary Dental Society.
Bacteria, combined with saliva and food debris between the tooth and gum, can cause plaque formulations that accumulate on the tooth. As the bacteria grow in the plaque and as calcium salts are deposited, plaque turns to tartar. As the tartar builds up on the teeth it leads to periodontal disease. This leads to red, swollen and tender gums, receding gums, bleeding, pain and bad breath. If left untreated, it can lead to tooth loss. Inflammation and infection associated with periodontal disease may damage other organs such as the heart, liver, and kidneys, or lead to other serious health problems.
In just a couple simple steps, pet owners can help prevent periodontal disease. The first, most important step is to bring your pet in for a routine physical exam including a dental exam. The second important step is to practice a regular dental care regimen at home, which includes brushing your pet's teeth with a specially formulated toothpaste and providing specially formulated food and treats for your pets to chew on. Your veterinarian can recommend food and treats that have proven benefits in plaque and tartar removal.
During the month of February, Portage Animal Hospital is offering 10% off all dental products, this includes veterinarian recommended dental chews and toothpaste found in our retail area. Portage Animal Hospital is also offering free oral exams for your pet. If your pet's dental is scheduled during the month of February, we offer a free fluoride treatment, a value of $16.50, and a free bag of CET Hextra Chews, a value of $6.99-14.49, depending on the size of your pet. What will the application of laser therapy do for my pet?
Laser therapy applied with the Companion therapy laser system provides a sterile, pain-free, surgery- free, drug-free treatment which is used to treat a variety of injuries, wounds, fractures, neurological conditions, numerous dermatological problems, and pain. Whether your pet is rehabilitating from trauma or injury, healing from wounds, or simply aging, your companion will benefit from this revolutionary new approach to Veterinary medicine.

Laser therapy is the only course of treatment that actually stimulates the body to heal from within. Non-thermal photons of light are administered to the body and absorbed by the injured cells. The cells are then stimulated and respond with a higher rate of metabolism. This results in increased circulation from the body, an anti-inflammatory reaction, relief from pain and an acceleration of the healing process.
"What to expect during a Companion Laser Therapy treatment session for your companion?
Simply put, it provides relief.
As the laser is administered, your pet will relax and enjoy, much like you, experiencing a good massage. The almost immediate relief of pain will allow your pet to be comfortable and any anxiety that your pet initially experienced will dissipate. Angry feline companions will start to purr and most of our canine companions will actually fall asleep during their therapy session.
Frequently, after therapy, the quote is heard: “Our young animal is back” or “she acts like a puppy again.” – Pain relief is provided in just a few minutes of therapy and that alone improves the quality of life for your best friend." (Companion Therapy Laser, 2011)
